Maronite Cathedral of Saint George
Beirut, Lebanon
Artist: p.Marko Ivan Rupnik, Centro Aletti i p.Jad Chlouk,
Production: Bokart, 2022.
The reconstruction of the recently demolished Maronite Cathedral of Saint George has taken place just 2 years after the devastating tragedy that hit the city of Beirut. Complete reconstruction started right after the strike, by order of archbishop of Beirut according to the artistic solution by p. Marko Rupnik and Centro Aletti, and p. Jad Chlouk from Beirut.
A total of 220 m2 of glass has been made using a new approach to the iconographic style. Hand-painted with the selected colors from Color Italia, tempered and laminated and placed in stainless steel frames.
The full circle of the most iconic Biblical stories has been conveyed by this means; all the way from annunciation to the resurrection of Christ, the complete story that continuously follows our lives in the Christian Community. There are 10 adjacent windows that represent the life of Saint Peter and Paul (as the Cathedral lies on the road that Saint Peter took when traveling west). The artist has achieved his goal to give this Church a new perspective of light and spread the message of hope and peace in these turbulent times.
